The allocation of sign rulership does not appear to be arbitrary. But still the planets and signs are related by what is known as sign rulership. Aries and Scorpio are ruled by Mars. Venus rules Taurus and Libra. Mercury governs Gemini and Virgo.
The Moon owns Cancer. The Sun is the lord of Leo. Jupiter governs Pisces and Sagittarius. Capricorn and Aquarius are ruled by Saturn. Leo and Ketu rules Scorpio and finally Rahu owns Leo and Ketu owns Scorpio.
1. Benefic and Malefic: Planets are benefic and malefic according to their inherent nature. They tend to do good or evil. Jupiter, Venus, Full Moon and well associated Mercury are held to be good planets. New Moon, badly associated Mercury, the Sun, Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu are evil or malefic ones. From the eighth day of the lunar month the Moon is full and strong. Moon is weak from the eighth day of the dark half.
2. Sexes: Jupiter, Mars and the Sun are the males; Venus, Rahu and the Moon are the females whereas Saturn, Mercury and Ketu are the hermaphrodites. This helps us to determine the sex of the child in the birth horoscope and the sex of the person involved if it is a horary chart.
3. Colors: Each planet represents a certain color. The significance of planetary colors are as follows: Sun – Copper, Mars – Blood Red, Moon – White, Saturn – Black, Mercury – Green, Jupiter – Bright Yellow and Venus – a mixture of all colors.
4. Planetary Nature: The Sun, Moon and the Jupiter are divine in nature and indicate Satvikaguna or philosophical and philanthropic dispositions. Venus and Mercury represent Rajasa or imperious disposition. Mars and Saturn represent Thamasa or dull nature. The Mars and Sun are fiery planets; Mercury is earthy; Saturn is airy; Jupiter is ethereal; and Venus and the Moon are watery.
Again, the Sun represents ego or atma; the Moon manas or mind, Mars martial power; Mercury good and eloquent speech; Jupiter indicates wisdom; Venus shows voluptuousness and gross sensual pleasures and finally Saturn indicates sorrows and miseries.
The Sun and the Moon are kings; Mars – commander-in-chief; Mercury – Yuvaraja; Jupiter and Venus – Prime Ministers and Saturn – the servant.
5. Planetary Relations:
a. Sun - Moon, mars and Jupiter are the friends of Sun; Mercury has neutral effect on Sun whereas the enemies are Saturn and Venus.
b. Moon - Sun and Mercury are her friends; Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn do not affect the Moon and the Moon goddess has no enemies.
c. Mars - Sun, Moon and the Jupiter are friends, Mercury - the enemy and Venus and Saturn does not affect Mars.
d. Mercury - Sun and the Venus are friends of this planet; Moon - the enemy and the other three planets - the Mars, Jupiter and the Saturn are neutral.
e. Jupiter - Sun, Moon, Mars are friends to this planet. Saturn does not affect Jupiter at all while Mercury, Venus are the enemies.
f. Venus - The one and only friend of the planet of love is Mercury, Sun and the Moon are the enemies and Mars, Jupiter are neutral.
g. Saturn - Mercury is his friend, Sun, Moon, Mars - the enemies and Jupiter's effect is null.
6. Planetary Castes: Finally comes the planetary castes. Venus and Jupiter are Brahmins; the Sun and the Mars are Khatriyas i.e. belong to the warrior caste; the Moon is Vaisya or trader; Mercury is Sudra or the farmer; while the Saturn is Antyaja or untouchable. This should not however be confused with the caste system.
